Özet:The global evolution and the current population growth exert ecological, economic and social pressures on the urban systems causing greater vulnerability to suffer natural and anthropic disasters. The present investigation seeks to determine the environmental resilience of the city of Loja to natural and anthropogenic hazards using environmental indicators such as air pollution, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, access to drinking water, natural risks and energy use. In order to fulfill the objectives, descriptive analyses and time series of each indicator were carried out; in addition, the methodology proposed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) to estimate GHG emissions was considered. Subsequently, the data was standardized to obtain an environmental resilience score. The results show that, the main natural risks of the city are floods or landslides, energy use has increased by 9.2% with an average of 619 kWh per capita/year, 1.43 tCO2 eq per capita is emitted, approximately 21% of the population still has no access to water; and, particulate matter (PM10) has an average of 14.7 µg/m3. The integrated resilience score with these indicators shows that Loja has a moderate resilience (-0.41), which suggests that despite being a growing city, it does not present problems that can significantly affect its resilience. The results found place Loja as a resilient city and can be a guide for other regions of Ecuador. It can also strengthen the development of strategies to increase the capacity of cities to deal with potential disasters.
