description Dietary fiber is of vital importance for intestinal health and intestinal mucosal integrity function. The present study analyzed the effect of different levels of soluble and insoluble fiber on the intestinal mucosal integrity of post-weaned guinea pigs. For this purpose, 32 weaned guinea pigs of 15 days of age, Type A1, were randomly distributed in four experimental diets formulated with different concentrations of soluble fiber (SF) and insoluble fiber (IF). The first diet low in SF (4.48%) and IF (29%), the second diet high in SF (12%) and low IF (28.0%), the third diet low in SF (6.52%) and high IF (35.5%) and finally diet four high in SF (12.0%) and IF (35.8%). The guinea pigs were fed ad libitum for 10 days, then sacrificed and samples were taken from the small intestine (jejunum). With the help of histological techniques, the variables villus height, crypt depth, muscle width, intestinal epithelium height and ratio were analyzed. Soluble fiber in high concentrations showed negative effects due to significantly reduced villi height (p=0.011) and ratio (p= 0.035). Similarly, the variable muscle width showed a trend (p=0.081) with the inclusion of high levels of soluble fiber. The inclusion of high concentrations of soluble fiber in post-weaning guinea pig treatments negatively affects the aforementioned variables, which could generate complications in the general health of the animals. Finally, no significant differences were observed in the effect of insoluble fiber and its interaction with soluble fiber on intestinal mucosal integrity.

Finally, no significant differences were observed in the effect of insoluble fiber and its interaction with soluble fiber on intestinal mucosal integrity.
