Izvleček:Agricultural inputs have now become an indispensable tool for improving maize production, a situation which produces serious health effects. The study “Environmental pollution by agrochemicals, forms of exposure and impacts on the health of the population of the parish Sabanilla located in the canton Celica“, was conducted using 164 farmers in the parish of Sabanilla. These farmers took part in a survey to the determinate the knowledge, attitudes and practices in relation to the acquisition, handling and application of agricultural inputs during the months from January to March 2013. Of the 164 farmers who participated in the study, 100 volunteered to partake in a serum cholinesterase. The investigation established that containers used on the farms. Among the factors which determine the exposure levels within the farmers, are: the amount of time farmers have been exposed to pesticides during their years dedicated to agriculture, the daily amount of hours dedicated to fumigation, the non-use of protective equipment such as goggles, face masks, gloves, especial clothes and eating during work with a brief wash of the hands using the same stored water as is utilized to prepare the inputs. Furthermore, the study established that the main complaints during or after work, are: headaches, chest pain, nausea and sweating among others. The results of serum cholinesterase determined that the average for men was 6717, 82 U/L, and for women 6583, 82 U/L. In addition, values lower that the normal range were only found in 3 cases, 100% of which were discovered in men. Keywords. - Pesticides, Cholinesterase, farmers.
