| Resumo: | Traditional medicine today continues to play an important role in health care. In Ecuador, especially in the province of Loja, the practice of traditional medicine continues to be present, being applied for the treatment of different pathologies, such as intestinal parasitism; this is one of the main public health problems that most often affects children of school age. Against this background, the objective of this research was to determine the therapeutic effect of paico and albendazole in the management of Ascaridiasis and giardiasis in schoolchildren of Rumiñahui school of San Lucas Parish of Loja Canton, for this purpose, a study was carried out with a quantitative, descriptive, transversal and almost experimental type in 48 children between the ages of 5 and 12 years, enrolled and regularly attending Rumiñahui school. Through non probabilistic sampling at the convenience of the researcher, with informed consent, signed by the children’s representatives, a peer review was carried out on the schoolchildren who participated in the study, to identify who had the types of parasites being studied. Once the requirement was fulfilled, they were divided into two groups: the first group made up of those who had ascaris lumbricoides and the second group who presented Giardia lamblia, in turn half of each established group was administered albendazole and the remaining paico. An interview was conducted to record the side effects. For the statistical analysis, tables drawn up in the IBM SPSS Statistics programme were used, which revealed the following: According to age and gender, there is a predominance of parasitism in schoolchildren between 7 and 8 years of age, with a total of 5 cases representing 41.7%; and more frequent among females, with 7 cases representing 58.3%. In terms of efficacy, paico and albendazolee were effective in Ascaridiasis in 100% of the case; however, for giardiasis both showed effectiveness of 50%. Finally, both Paico and albendazole did not have any adverse effects on the participants. Keywords: parasitism, giardiasis, ascaridiasis, albendazole, paico. |
