| Sumari: | The overweight and obesity constitute a severe problem for the public health. Their presence is linked to sequence factors that threaten the probability of presenting this illness. Therefore, the purpose of the current research was to determine the factors of risk that influence on the overweight and obesity development on adult people between 45 and 60 years old who attend to external appointments at “San Vicente de Paul” Hospital of Pasaje canton. The study was descriptive and transversal cut. The sample was confirmed by 86 elder adults that accomplished with the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The applied technique was the survey. The obtained results showed the percentages as follow; the 30,2% of the population presented overweight, the 51,2% with obesity type I; the 16,3% with obesity type II and the 2,3% with obesity type III. Regarding the factors of risk, the 17,4% of the participants are exposed to inheritance factor, a 72,1% does not do exercises, into the 59,3% the caloric contribution of diet is high; the 86,4% does not consume a balance diet, 69,8% does not have an appropriate nocturnal rest, the 54,7% manifests that the emotions influence on their appetite, the 17,4% suffers diabetes, the 54,7% has hypertension and the 17,4% tend to smoke. When relating the factors of risk with the overweight and obesity, throughout the chi-square calculus, it was determined that only the inheritance factor constitutes a symbolic relation for the population.
