| Resumo: | Objective: Analyze the cases of exploratory laparotomy occurred in the Hospital Manuel Ygnacio Monteros - IESS Loja, in the period January - August 2014 and thus generate a closer knowledge of the exploratory laparotomy as a procedure performed in cases of acute abdomen, to learn about the distribution of that procedure in different age groups, known as pre-surgical diagnoses vary according to the findings in the same, well knowing what the most common operations performed in the same, adjacent to this have been observed which are the most common complications associated with this procedure, and finally the total days of hospitalization, these data help to better understand how the distribution of pathologies that require this surgical technique at our location. Methods: A descriptive, retrospective and cross-sectional study of medical records of patients with acute abdomen underwent Exploratory laparotomy in the emergency service of the hospital under study by reviewing records from January 1 to August 31, 2014. Environment : Department of Emergency and Surgery Hospital Manuel Ygnacio Monteros Valdivieso. Results: During the study period 181 cases of patients with acute abdomen were found and underwent exploratory laparotomy, where the age group in which there have been more Exploratory laparotomy were those between 27-59 years old (43.60%), the main preoperative diagnosis was acute appendicitis (75.70%), the main finding during laparotomy was acute appendicitis (59.70%). the main operation performed has been to Conventional Appendectomy (63.00%), followed by further washing Appendectomy Abdominal Cavity (18.20%), in most cases patients undergoing exploratory laparotomy showed no complication postoperative (81.80%), and among the complications were found when pneumonia, sepsis, paralytic ileus, wound infection, intra-abdominal abscesses, seromas, in most patients the total time of hospitalization was 1 to 3 days (49.70%). Conclusions: Exploratory laparotomy is a surgical technique but is being replaced by other less invasive is still used in all ages and is a great help to diseases where there is diagnostic uncertainty or higher surgical field are required, in addition to following the protocols correctly the likelihood of complications is low as inpatient days.
