description There is great scientific evidence on fluorides and their benefits to prevent caries, but these are also the cause for the formation of dental fluorosis in excessive intakes during the period of the growth of the teeth, specifically the first 5 years of life, which causes structural, functional, aesthetic and psychological damage. A study of observational, quantitative, cross-sectional and field type was done, which aimed to analyze the prevalence of dental fluorosis in children aged 7 to 10 years in an urban and rural school of Loja city. For this, 71 children were examined in total, by direct observation with an intraoral mirror and it was determined whether or not they had fluorosis through the Dean Index; In addition, to carry out a study of water in the sector. The prevalence of fluorosis was 49.3% with low ranks and moderate and severe ranks were not found. There is a greater percentage in the male sex of 55.6% and according to age there is a higher prevalence at 7 years with 16.9%. In the water study we found 0.01 to 0.03 mg / l of fluoride, which is below the range of 0.7 and 1.2 according to WHO. Concluding that there is a prevalence of dental fluorosis of 49.3%, being higher in the rural sector (33.8%) than in the urban sector (15.5%).
