Zusammenfassung:Bacterial resistance is a major public health problems facing society today, existing strains resistant to several antibiotics that once were effective not only in hospitals but also at Community level. A common bacteria that has developed resistance mechanisms is Escherichia coli, which in turn is the main causative agent of urinary tract infections with 95 % of cases. This descriptive cross-sectional study called "Escherichia coli producing extended spectrum beta-lactamases isolated from urine cultures from outpatients of General Hospital Isidro Ayora"; It aimed to investigate the presence of ESBL, distributed by sex, age and correlate with recurrent UTI. The universe of the study was 233 urine samples sown in sheep blood agar and MacConkey agar, 56 strains of Escherichia coli were isolated; of which 8 were ESBL producers; to identify the presence of ESBL instructions CLSI M100- S24 manual are followed, performing quality control; as positive control Klebsiella pneumoniae ATCC 700603 and as negative control Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 The prevalence of Escherichia coli producing extended-spectrum beta-lactamase was 14.29% in the entire study population, affecting entire female sex; finding a high percentage of relationship between ESBL-producing Escherichia coli and recurrent UTI Keywords: (ESBL) extended-spectrum beta-lactamases, Escherichia coli, (UTI) Urinary tract infection.
