| Resumo: | This paper analyzes the impact of the level of household income on child malnutrition in Loja city in 2014, motivated by considerations of economic literature specializing in the subject, that care and nutrition during the first years of life, are critical elements in educational and job performance of individuals, therefore constituting a key determinant to the development of human capital in a society. Measurements of weight and height of children was used in the analysis of child malnutrition to calculate z-scores, suggesting in the Multicentre Growth Reference Study of the World Health Organization, that enabling objective nutritional measurement of children in the sample. The Z-scores calculated allow to obtain three types of malnutrition: global, acute and chronic, resulting the latter has the highest incidence in the city, since 17.6% of the population studied suffers this type of problem. To determine the incidence of income of households on child malnutrition, estimates were performed using a probabilistic logic model and ordered logistic model. In regressions, household food expenditure is used as a proxy variable of income, among other social and specific child care regressors. So, it was determined that families of the poorest sectors recorded higher likely to face chronic malnutrition, which decrease in higher income deciles. In addition, favorable effects of college education of mother, optimal breastfeeding, taking the children to child development centers and frequent consumption of foods rich in natural starch were verified. Keywords: household income, consumption, z-score, chronic malnutrition, logistic model, ordered logistic model. |
