Summary: | This research study was carried out in the Experimental Farm “Punzara” of Universidad Nacional de Loja, with the objective to improve kikuyo pasturelands (Pennisetum clandestinum), through the introduction of two species of grasses and legumes. Each plot was an experimental unit. Four treatments were evaluated in the following way: treatment one (T1): natural prairie of Kikuyo (Pennisetum clandestinum); treatment two (T2): natural prairie of Kikuyo (Pennisetum clandestinum) plus white clover (Trifolium repens) plus Ray grass (Lolium perenne); treatment three (T3): natural prairie of Kikuyo (Pennisetum clandestinum) plus alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), plus blue grass (Dactylis glomerata); treatment four (T4): natural prairie of Kikuyo (Pennisetum clandestinum), plus white clover (Trifolium repens), plus Ray grass (Lolium perenne), plus alfalfa (Medicago sativa l.) and blue grass (Dactylis glomerata). The following variables were studied: plant height, biomass, receptive capacity and nutritional value. The results showed a greater plant height in the treatment four (T4), with 33,25 cm; While the lower height is presented in treatment one (T1), 23,67 cm; the yield biomass increased from 7,625 tons/HA to 16.39 tons/HA in the treatment four (T4) which was superior to all other treatments; the receptive capacity was higher in treatment four (T4) with 5.60 UBA, While the treatment two (T2) registered 3.39 UBA. Finally, treatment three (natural prairie of Kikuyu, Alfalfa and blue- grass, Dactylis glomerata) presented the best nutritional value with a content of 19.56% crude protein (CP); While treatment one had lower content of crude protein (CP). To conclude, the introduction of grasses and legumes improve the quality of the natural grassland of Kikuyo. |
