| Summary: | In Ecuador, the oil sector was responsible for 58% of the country's greenhouse gas emissions in 2020, while the energy sector and land use change contributed 23% and 19%, respectively. Consequently, the overall objective of the present research work was to evaluate the relationship between trade, globalization and corruption on greenhouse gases in Ecuador during 1980-2021, using statistical and econometric techniques, in order to propose policies that promote environmental sustainability in the country. Therefore, the data used in this study were obtained from the World Development Indicators, the Emissions for Global Atmospheric Research and the Institute for Government Quality, and time series cointegration techniques such as the Maki, Hatemi-J, Error Correction (VEC) models and the Breitung and Candelon causality test were employed. In relation to the results obtained, the existence of an equilibrium relationship was proved, both in the long and short term, and a causal relationship between the variables under study was also evidenced. In this regard, it is essential to establish measures to promote education and environmental awareness in society, as well as the development of clean technologies and the promotion of sustainable practices in industry and agriculture, among other sectors. In this way, progress can be made towards a more just and equitable development model, in harmony with the environment and the needs of the communities. |
