From Family and Community Medicine, it will contribute to detect and treat opportunely not only with medicines but also with a bio-psycho-social approach. To evaluate family functionality, protective and risk factors for depression in older adults in zone 7, 2016. A prospective, descriptive, analytical and cross-sectional study, from January to December 2016, through a personal house-to-house interview with 1146 elderly adults from Loja, El Oro and Zamora Chinchipe, with a sociodemographic information collection instrument, the FF-SIL family functional test and the modified Yesavage geriatric depression scale, as part of the macro study: "Quality of life of the older adult zone 7" using the SPSS program, version 16. Family functionality was associated with depression where 39% of older adults living in dysfunctional families had depression. Also with risk factors in order of prevalence: living without a partner 57,31%, belong to the fourth age 53,21%, to suffer from chronic diseases 48,83%, with the female sex 48,38%, self-identify as mestizo 47,12%.
