| Özet: | This paper examines the impact of motherhood on the wage gaps between mothers and non- mothers in Ecuador during 2023, using data from the National Survey of Employment, Unemployment, and Underemployment provided by the National Institute of Statistics and Census (INEC). A comprehensive analysis was conducted using a descriptive approach and econometric models such as Oaxaca-Blinder and Propensity Score Matching (PSM) to quantify and explain these disparities. The findings confirm the existence of a significant wage gap, with mothers earning lower incomes than non-mothers. The Oaxaca-Blinder decomposition identifies this difference as due to both explanatory factors, such as women's education and experience, and unobservable factors that can be attributed primarily to discrimination. The PSM model validates the negative impact of motherhood on income, even after matching characteristics across observations, thus demonstrating that the gap is even greater, thus validating the relevance of the phenomenon. Therefore, this study underscores the importance of motherhood as a key determinant of gender wage inequalities. It also highlights the need to design public policies aimed at reducing the economic penalty associated with motherhood, not only considering wage equity but also measures such as access to childcare services and the promotion of more flexible yet fair working conditions. |
