Zusammenfassung:Because most students have little or no ocular symptoms, it is important to recognize early ametropia, and initiate appropriate treatment to improve visual development, motor status, language and social relations among students, preventing the development of future complications. So the goal was to detect refractive errors in school students Balbina Moreno Gonzanamá in Canton aged 12-17 years in the period July-December 2012, and to identify the most common type of ametropia by gender and background pathological family. It is a cross-sectional study, conducted at 104 Moreno Balbina school students through visual acuity tests of which 31 cases had some type of ametropia. Patients were excluded at the time of examination or ocular pathology presented lens wear. The evidence is more prevalent in females with 54.8% compared to the male, of which most had no family medical history. The most common type of ametropia of the study population was 58.1% astigmatism dominate the female, followed by myopia with 29% male gender prevailed and finally with hyperopia 12.9% more often in the genre female.
