The aim of this study was to describe mood disorders in pre-surgical patients hospitalized in the surgical area of the Isidro Ayora General Hospital, according to clinical and sociodemographic factors. The study was a descriptive, quantitative, non-experimental, cross-sectional design. Seventy patients who met the inclusion criteria participated. A survey was used as a technique and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) as an instrument. The data were processed in the SPSS 2.2 program and analyzed using descriptive statistics. The findings obtained in relation to the sociodemographic characteristics indicate that 61.4% are male, 47.1% correspond to the adult age group, 37.1% are unemployed, and 45.7% have primary education and are unmarried. As for the clinical factors related to mood disorders, 94.3 % of the patients were hospitalized for 1 to 5 days, anxiety was a clinical problem in 50 % of the population and depression was normal in 65.7 % of the population. It is considered that the mood disorders present in hospitalized pre-surgical patients correspond to normal depression and anxiety as a clinical problem, especially in patients hospitalized from 1 to 5 days, with no reported history of hospitalization or pathology, and sociodemographic factors that coincide with unemployment and primary education level |

Sin duda, las experiencias negativas que puede tener el paciente con relación a una intervención quirúrgica, pueden afectar directamente a su recuperación e incrementar su estancia hospitalaria. La presente investigación tuvo como objetivo, describir los trastornos del estado de ánimo en pacientes prequirúrgicos hospitalizados en el área de cirugía del Hospital General Isidro Ayora, según factores clínicos y sociodemográficos. Se trató de un estudio descriptivo, cuantitativo, diseño no experimental y corte transversal. Participaron 70 pacientes que cumplieron los criterios de inclusión, se utilizó como técnica una encuesta y como instrumento la escala de ansiedad y depresión hospitalaria (HADS). Los datos fueron procesados en el programa SPSS 2.2 y analizados a través de la estadística descriptiva. Los resultados obtenidos con relación a las características sociodemográficas señalan que el 61,4 % son hombres, 47,1% corresponden al grupo etario de adultos, 37,1% desempleados, 45,7 % de instrucción primaria y de estado civil solteros. En cuanto a los factores clínicos relacionados con los trastornos del estado de ánimo predomina con un 94,3 % el tiempo de hospitalización de 1 a 5 días, la ansiedad se manifiesta como un problema clínico en el 50 % de la población y la depresión como normal en el 65,7 %.
