| Sammanfattning: | Farmers are exposed to a wide variety of pesticides, the most toxic and harmful being organophosphates and carbamates, which lead to various adverse health effects, since they cause cholinesterase inhibition, mainly butyrylcholinesterase, which is a good indicator of occupational exposure to organophosphates and carbamates. The objective was to determine serum cholinesterase levels in farmers exposed to pesticides. This study was a descriptive cross-sectional study. A total of 78 people were evaluated, all male, with a mean age of 41 (15) years of which 63 corresponded to the exposed farmers and 15 corresponded to the control group. Data were collected using a survey. Cholinesterase levels were measured in blood serum by spectrophotometry. The comparison of cholinesterase levels with the type of pesticide was analyzed by ANOVA, and the correlation with the use and non-use of safety protection equipment by Chi-square. Regarding the results, 63% (n=41) of the cholinesterase values in the exposed farmers were within the reference value (3.5 KU/L-8.5 KU/L), 27% (n=17) were low, and 7.9% (n=5) were above the reference value, where the enzymatic mean in comparison with the control group showed a significant reduction (p>0.05). In addition, it was obtained that there is no statistically significant relationship (p<0.05) with the type of pesticide used, and with the use of protective equipment. In conclusion, the decrease in cholinesterase levels indicates a health problem due to the use of organophosphate and carbamate chemicals, which depend on factors including exposure time, the use of protective equipment, humidity and temperature |
