| סיכום: | The objective of this study is to determine the effect of remittances on the Human Development Index (HDI) in 84 countries worldwide during the period 2000-2016. For this purpose, the data were taken from the World Bank (2019) and from the Human Development Index and Indicators database (2018). The research is based on empirical evidence. Panel data with ordinary least squares (OLS) and generalized least squares (GLS) techniques are used to develop the model. The dependent variable is the HDI, the independent variable is remittances, and as control variables: income from natural resources, unemployment, and economic growth. The countries were classified by group of high, low, upper-middle, and lower-middle-income countries. The results indicate that remittances both globally and by groups of countries have a positive impact on the HDI. Regarding the control variables, the income from natural resources is found to be positive and statistically significant in low-income countries. In contrast, unemployment has a negative relationship in four of the five panels and economic growth does not have a statistically significant correlation in any of the panels with the HDI. One of the main suggested policy implications is to mitigate the cost of sending remittances, especially to low- and lower-middle-income countries, where it is more expensive to send and is above the global average. |
