Conocimientos y prácticas de bioseguridad aplicada por el personal de enfermería del Hospital Isidro Ayora de Loja

Biosecurity is the application of knowledge, techniques and equipment for preventive management of health staff from potentially infectious microorganisms, its purpose is to lessen the likelihood of getting infections at work, making emphasis on prevention. This research work was carried out in the area of Pediatrics, which it was proposed to determine the knowledge and practice of nursing staff from the Pediatrics area, and we determined to identify the knowledge that nurses have on biosafety/biosecurity and see if it’s applied by nurses. This was a descriptive study, a survey was applied and an observation guide was also applied to 21 people who are nurses (11 licensed nurses and 10 practical nurses). The most of the staff surveyed have knowledge on biosecurity, disinfection, hand washing purposes, materials needed for its effect on common and infectious waste. In addition, a significant percentage don’t know about biosafety standards that are set by the Ministry of Public Health, antiseptics, the right use of protective clothing and the biological risks. Just by observing we could evidence that the use of gloves and masks are mostly used. The washing hands technique in a low percentage is performed before or after preforming an invasive procedure, so most of the materials used are necessary for it execution. Therefore nursing staff is aware of biosecurity but they do not practice it, this is why it was recommended to have a continuous and ongoing training for the nursing staff in order to strengthen previously acquired knowledge previously mentioned and also to help improve their self-care and the care for users.
