This research work was carried out in the area of Pediatrics, which it was proposed to determine the knowledge and practice of nursing staff from the Pediatrics area, and we determined to identify the knowledge that nurses have on biosafety/biosecurity and see if it’s applied by nurses. This was a descriptive study, a survey was applied and an observation guide was also applied to 21 people who are nurses (11 licensed nurses and 10 practical nurses). The most of the staff surveyed have knowledge on biosecurity, disinfection, hand washing purposes, materials needed for its effect on common and infectious waste. In addition, a significant percentage don’t know about biosafety standards that are set by the Ministry of Public Health, antiseptics, the right use of protective clothing and the biological risks. Just by observing we could evidence that the use of gloves and masks are mostly used. The washing hands technique in a low percentage is performed before or after preforming an invasive procedure, so most of the materials used are necessary for it execution. Therefore nursing staff is aware of biosecurity but they do not practice it, this is why it was recommended to have a continuous and ongoing training for the nursing staff in order to strengthen previously acquired knowledge previously mentioned and also to help improve their self-care and the care for users. |

Este trabajo se realizó en el área de Pediatría, para lo cual se planteó determinar los conocimientos y la práctica de bioseguridad en el personal enfermería del área de Pediatría e identificar el conocimiento del personal de enfermería sobre bioseguridad y conocer la aplicación de bioseguridad por el personal de enfermería. Fue un estudio de tipo descriptivo, se aplicaron encuestas y una guía de observación a 21 personas que constituyen el personal de enfermería (11 licenciadas y 10 auxiliares de enfermería). La mayor parte del personal encuestado tiene conocimientos sobre bioseguridad, desinfección, la finalidad del lavado de manos, los materiales necesarios para su efecto y sobre los desechos comunes e infecciosos. Además un porcentaje significativo desconoce sobre las normas de bioseguridad establecidas por el Ministerio de Salud Pública, los antisépticos, el uso correcto de las prendas de protección y los riesgos biológicos. Mediante la observación se evidencio utilización de guantes y mascarilla con mayor frecuencia. La técnica del lavado de manos en un bajo porcentaje lo realiza antes o después de realizar un procedimiento invasivo y en una mayor parte utilizan los materiales necesarios para su ejecución. Por tal motivo el personal de enfermería, tiene conocimiento pero no practica bioseguridad, para lo cual se recomendó la capacitación continua y permanente de personal de salud con el propósito de reforzar los conocimientos anteriormente adquiridos y contribuir a mejorar su autocuidado y la atención a los usuarios.
