| Summary: | Thyroid hormones are essential for normal development of the central, growth and metabolic activity of the nervous system. The determination of thyroid profile, it is important to assess the functioning of the thyroid gland, an increase or decrease of these hormones can trigger diseases such as hypo-and hyperthyroidism, 3.4 and 10.8% of the population generally for subclinical hypothyroidism, may get up to 20% in women over 60 years (1) hyperthyroidism is less common than hypothyroidism, its frequency is 0.5% in women, 0.8% subclinical cases and 3% in the elderly (2), in the parish of Buena Vista, the existence of predisposing factors such as age, sex, lack of balanced diet with adequate amounts of iodine, inadequate care health services, and the need for data verifiable statistics on this population, contribute to this problem is present locally. Reason for which this research was conducted in order to quantify the thyroid profile as a presumptive indicator of hypo-and hyperthyroidism. The study is a descriptive, prospective, cross-sectional, the sample was 244 people who met the inclusion criteria, there was the determination of thyroid stimulating hormone, triiodothyronine and thyroxine by electrochemiluminescence method in the laboratory doctors of the city of Loja.
