| Resumo: | The incorporation of multiculturalism essentially involves an ethical and political positioning of recognition and respect for diversity that allows horizontal and synergistic interaction, based on knowledge, dialogue and full respect for the rights of individuals. The hegemony of the Western approach to healthcare and disability have policies and health programs to understand, respect and incorporate ancestral knowledge and health practices of traditional medicine and alternative medicine, is expressed among other things in the deep limited access to health services, especially for indigenous peoples and nationalities and Afro-Ecuadorian, so the challenge is to incorporate transversely intercultural approach in the care and management model, and that the resources of traditional medicine and Alternative medicines are complementary. The World Health Organization defines maternal death as the death of a woman while pregnant or within 42 days of termination of pregnancy, due to any cause related to pregnancy or aggravated by it or its staff in the Ecuador in 2013 the mortality rate for women was 155 per 100,000 live births. In this descriptive study, whose aim was to determine the knowledge and practices about postpartum care, in which mothers residing in the neighborhood Obrapia Loja involved, the results were that mothers are unaware of the changes Physical occurring postpartum, but they know the psychological changes that occur at this stage, the power is limited because they consume chicken as main food, recognize the importance of personal hygiene, use and consumption of medicinal plants, rest postpartum and sexual abstinence.
