| Izvleček: | This study aimed to quantify the frequency of exposure to ionizing radiation received by patients admitted to the Neonatology Service of Hospital Isidro Ayora and compare the radiation dose to the natural background radiation and the additional risk of fatal cancer due to the examination it was performed an analytical observational cross-sectional cohort study of all patients admitted to the Neonatology Service from September 2013 to March 2014. For the development of this study it has been used a total of 235 patients, the dame people who werw subjected to test of ionizing radiation. In the most significant findings was found that the Chest X Ray examination in one position is the order that most often requested as breathlessness pathology is more prevalent en the service, in addition it was determined the only 38 % of orders was requested to assist in determining new pathology diagnosed with radiologically significant results. Its recommended for pediatricians to take awareness of the risks and benefits of a study by ionizing radiation, and to consider alternative methods of diagnosis; in addition it has to be teach in the hospitalization area a written control in order to quantify the radiation exposure and to be able to establish the bases of its control.
