Resumo:Adolescence is a complex stage in which important changes take place and food habits are acquired. Diet quality is directly related to overweight and obesity, being considered risk factors for chronic non-transmissible degenerative diseases that manifest in adulthood. A quantitative, descriptive, non - experimental cross - sectional study was carried out to determine the quality of the diet and its relationship with the Body Mass Index (BMI) in 10th - grade students of the Mixed Private Schools of the City of Loja, As well as: analyze the quality of diet, establish the nutritional status by means of BMI and relate the quality of diet with the nutritional status according to gender. A total of 147 adolescents met the inclusion criteria, anthropometric assessment was performed to establish the BMI and a survey was conducted to know the Healthy Eating Index. 72.1% have a diet that needs changes, 25.2% have an inadequate diet and 2.7% have an adequate diet. 63.9% of adolescents have a normal weight, 17.7% weight low, 16% pre-obesity, and 2% obesity. Of adolescents with normopeso: 25.9% of men and 20.4% of women have a diet that requires changes, 12.2% of women and 4.8% of men carry an inadequate diet and 0.7% Have a proper diet. Of the adolescents who have low weight 4.8 and 6.8% of women and men respectively, they need changes in their diet. Overweight adolescents need changes in their diets in 5.4% of women and 7.5% of men; While those with an inadequate diet account for 0.7 and 2.7% of women and men. The 0.7% of men and women with obesity needs changes in their diet. Key words: diet quality, healthy eating index, nutritional status, adolescents.
