The present investigation consisted of determining obesity as a risk factor for the development of polycystic ovarian syndrome, a descriptive, descriptive, retrospective study was carried out to determine the prevalence of obesity in women of childbearing age between 15-45 years, to identify the prevalence of polycystic ovarian syndrome according to the age group and finally the body mass index and the degree of obesity of the patients of health centers N ° 1, N ° 2, N ° 3 of the city of Loja, period 2010-2015, Where the universe and sample were 50 women of childbearing age with a diagnosis of polycystic ovarian syndrome, the data were obtained from the medical records for which a data collection sheet prepared by the author was used. The results were tabulated in the Microsoft Excel program and presented in tables and bar charts, the processing of the information allowed to determine that the greater prevalence of the syndrome is found in young women between the 15 and 20 years, obesity was present in 26% (n = 13) of women with polycystic ovary syndrome, the most frequent body mass index was 30 kg / m2 with 10% (n = 5) and the most frequent degree of obesity was type I. Key words: Obesity, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome.El síndrome de ovarios poliquísticos ha evolucionado a través de la historia convirtiéndose en un trastorno multisistémico que afecta a la mujer en todos sus ámbitos. El presente trabajo de investigación consistió en determinar la obesidad como factor de riesgo para el desarrollo de síndrome de ovarios poliquísticos, para ello se realizó un estudio de tipo analítico, descriptivo, retrospectivo cuyos objetivos fueron determinar la prevalencia de la obesidad en mujeres de edad fértil entre 15-45 años, identificar la prevalencia de síndrome de ovarios poliquísticos de acuerdo al grupo etáreo y finalmente se determinó el índice de masa corporal y el grado de obesidad de las pacientes de los centros de salud N° 1, N°2, N°3 de la ciudad de Loja, periodo 2010-2015, donde el universo y muestra fueron 50 mujeres en edad fértil con diagnóstico de síndrome de ovarios poliquísticos, los datos se obtuvieron de las historias clínicas para lo cual se utilizó una ficha de recolección de datos elaborado por la autora. Los resultados se tabularon en el programa Microsoft Excel y se presentaron en tablas y gráfico de barras, el procesamiento de la información permitió determinar que la mayor prevalencia del síndrome se encuentra en mujeres jóvenes entre los 15 a 20 años, la obesidad se presentó en el 26% de mujeres con síndrome de ovarios poliquísticos, el índice de masa corporal más frecuente fue 30 kg/m2 (10%) y el grado de obesidad más frecuente fué el tipo I.
