Summary:A descriptive, qualitative-quantitative, prospective study was carried out at the Educational Unit Emiliano Ortega Espinoza del Canton Catamayo, province Loja, from July to December 2016, with the general objective of determining the prevalence of risk factors for chronic diseases with the students of 3rd year of high school of the Unidad Emiliano Ortega Espinoza, STEP wise method. Of the results obtained, the most frequent in 155 students were: alcohol consumption (82.96), sedentary lifestyle (80%), low physical activity level (75.48), low weekly fruit consumption (27.74 %) and vegetables (10.97%) and tobacco consumption (12.26%), in their order. On the other hand, according to the classification of the STEPS manual the results of biological risk factors indicated that 21.29% of the population studied had altered blood pressure and 2.58% had high blood pressure, overweight (12.9%), obesity 5%, altered cholesterol values in 14.84% and high in 4.52% and altered lipid values in 12.26% and high in 5.81%. It is concluded that half of the students presented 3 to 6 risk factors for chronically ill and the fifth part consolidated the 8 factors. KEY WORDS: risk factors, chronic diseases, hypertension.
