Čoahkkáigeassu:This research determined the change in land cover and land use between 1986-2017 in the cantons of Sozoranga and Calvas in the province of Loja, through the supervised classification of Landsat 5 (TM) and 8 (OLI) satellite images. To carry out this study, cartographic information was collected from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and the Center for Territorial Research of the National University of Loja. The satellite images were subjected to pretreatment, processing and cartographic validation through the Kappa statistical index, to determine their degree of reliability; and also through the overlay of these maps and the application of algorithms, indicators of the natural subsystem were determined in order to propose strategic guidelines focused on land use planning. The results show that between the period 1986-2017 in the cantons of Sozoranga and Calvas, the forest cover was modified mainly due to agricultural activities, which decreased by 17.98%, from 41,293 ha to 22,500 ha, the cover of shrub and herbaceous vegetation increased by 53.62% from 22,256 ha to 67,113 ha. On the other hand, the deforestation rate was higher in Sozoranga canton with 6.39% and in Calvas canton with 5.48%; while the degree of anthropic intervention in both cantons showed a progressive growth between 21.56% and 29.71%, respectively, and the agricultural frontier did not show a considerable expansion in both cantons. Given the evident changes in coverage, strategic environmental planning guidelines were formulated, in which the potentialities and problems presented by the cantons were made evident. The guidelines will serve for the GADs in decision-making as a management model to develop articulation strategies based on Conservation, Recuperation, Protection and Productive Management.
