| Summary: | The majority of adolescents from educational institutions in the country and in the province of Loja begin their sexual life without having the necessary knowledge about the proper use of contraceptive methods, exposing themselves to contracting sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancy during this stage. In view of the impact of this problem, the present research was conducted to determine the knowledge and use of contraceptive methods in adolescents of the first year of high school Bernardo Valdivieso afternoon section, in addition to identify the best known and used contraceptive method, as well as the main factors limiting knowledge of the topic; For this reason, a descriptive, cross-sectional, prospective study was carried out using previously developed surveys, involving 107 students from the 1040 enrolled in the institution, with 85.05% being knowledgeable about contraceptive methods; however, 14.95% reported not knowing the subject, whereas the condom was the most known and used contraceptive method with 38.32 and 35.51% respectively, finally the limitations of access to information found were afraid to discuss this issue with their parents in a 50.4% followed by the little information provided in the school with a 22.43%, noting that both parents and educational institutions should be constituted as a main source to report on the diversity of contraceptive methods that allow adolescents to have a knowledge plenary on the subject.
