Summary: | The supracondylar elbow fracture in childhood is a high incidence pathology in children today. During all these years, treatment has been involved in multiple studies, many of which have ended with controversial results, which has not yet been possible to establish a definitive result that covers all doubts present in each of the professionals they face this disease in her diary work. This descriptive study was conducted to assess the degree of effectiveness of surgical and orthopedic treatment by characterizing the epidemiological clinical whole analysis of treatment as fracture, assessment consolidation time, degree of functionality and aesthetic factor type, and also the determination of the early and late complications in supracondylar elbow fractures in children 5 to 10 years of type II and III age, who entered the hospital Manuel Ygnacio Monteros and General Isidro Ayora hospital in the city of Loja between January 2011 and March 2015. 66 patients in total, whose data were collected with the prior approval of the Director of each Hospital, and by using a data collection sheet were found. The most common age was between 5-7 years 64%, the genre that introduced this pathology was 58% male, upper limb most affected was the left in 61%, and the mechanism production by extension highest incidence was 82%. In total 27 fractures Type II were presented and 39 fractures type III, of which 34 patients received orthopedic treatment and 32 received surgical treatment, in the time of consolidation, degree of functionality and aesthetic factor, patients treated orthopedically performed better than surgically treated. Through this research it was concluded that the orthopedic treatment supracondylar elbow fractures in children have better results and fewer complications than surgical treatment, recommending its use in cases warrants each pathology.
