| description | The sensitivity of a dental organ after a restoration represents one of the most frequent side effects in the dental office; we evidenced this sensitivity in the patient as pain associated with chewing ingestion of cold, hot, and, or sweet foods that can last for several days or weeks, with the actual cause being completely unknown. For this reason, the present review of the literature aimed at determining the main factors that cause postoperative sensitivity, specifying preventive measures, and establishing a general treatment. The present study was of a bibliographic, analytical, and transversal type, for which we considered 25 scientific articles in English and Spanish 10 years old that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria in databases such as Pubmed, Medline, Elsevier, Scielo, Medigraphic to comply with the objectives proposed for the present investigation, we processed the data in Microsoft Word, Mendeley, Microsoft Excel, for subsequent analysis and tabulation of information. The results establish that the most common factors causing postoperative sensitivity are polymerization shrinkage (26,32%), handling of etch and rinse adhesive systems (18,42%), followed by occlusal interferences or contacts (10,53%), poor light during light curing (10,53%), cavity contamination (10,53%), cavity depth (7,89%), dentin desiccation (5,26%), not to use dentin pulp protection (5,26%), frictional heat during cavity preparation (2,63%) and restoration replacement (2,63%) |
