总结:Breastfeeding as a protective factor against upper respiratory infections; the purpose of this study was to determine the influence of breastfeeding in relation to upper respiratory infections in children from 0 to 18 months of age at Centro de Salud de Vilcabamba. Of the 122 cases studied through surveys and review of their medical records, it is clearly shown that approximately 63.12% maintain exclusive breastfeeding practices for at least the first six months of life, which has a beneficial effect on the risk of suffering an upper respiratory tract infection, due to the fact that there were only 10 cases of infection, with the common cold and unspecified pharyngitis being the most prevalent illnesses. The analysis of the variables and the Pearson Chi-Square statistical association test, using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software, showed a statistically significant relationship of 25.16 (CI 0.95), thus concluding that breastfeeding is a protective factor against infections affecting the upper respiratory tract during the first six months of life. Key words: Breast milk, jar milk, formula, common cold.
