Gaia:The present study called "Characterization of the coffee value chain under the independent and associative modality in the cantons of Balsas and Marcabelí, province of El Oro, in the period 2020-2021." Its purpose is to identify and characterize the links, the different actors involved and the limiting factors that affect the value chain of coffee cultivation in the Balsas and Marcabelí cantons. Descriptive, analytical, synthetic and comparative methods were used in the study, in order to identify and describe the links and actors involved in both value chains, compare and diagram them, the applied techniques were the survey and the interview, which allowed obtaining the necessary information on the actors in the value chain, in the same way, non-probability sampling was used for convenience, allowing the creation of a sample according to the ease of access and the availability of people for the application of the survey. As a result of the study, it was evidenced that the value chain under the associative modality is much more favorable, because public institutions provide greater attention in terms of promoting their coffee at the local and national level, and they also facilitate their access to the market thanks to the volume of production that they monopolize, and the actor who has the greatest benefits is the producer because they increase their income and therefore improve their quality of life, but the same does not happen with the independent producer, which in this case their form of cultivation It is totally different, it has larger amounts of land, fewer plants per hectare and with very low yields in quintals of coffee, due to the lack of training and technical advice, in terms of marketing it is the one that earns the least from the sale of a quintal of coffee since it does not have fixed clients and is a victim of the negotiating power of the intermediaries, in this case the collectors.
