Riassunto:Diabetic renal injury is the most frequent microvascular complication of diabetes mellitus, present in 20% to 40% of cases considered the main cause of end-stage renal disease. The objective of the investigation was to identify if the family functionality influences the appearance of renal disease in diabetics from 40 to 79 years of age of the city of Loja. It was a case-control study, carried out in the urban area, chosen according to systematic stratified probabilistic sampling. It was evaluated the family functionality with the family function test (FFSIL). A questionnaire was used to collect sociodemographic data, anthropometric assessment and clinical control elements: Glucose, glycosylated hemoglobin, triglycerides, cholesterol, high and low density lipoproteins, determination of albumin using a test strip and calculation of glomerular filtration using the CKD EPI formula. There were studied 500 patients, 339 (67.8%) female and 161 (32.2%) male with a mean age of 61.37 years; Time of evolution of diabetes with a mean of 3.52 years. In terms of schooling 162 (32.4%) with complete primary education and 38 (7.6%) illiterate. When investigating the correspondence between family functionality using the FFSSIL test and diabetic renal injury, there was no statistically significant association (54 nephropathy, 10.8%), with a value of X2 of association of 1,021 with p <0.005 (0.045). It was found that the perception of the family functionality and the development of diabetic renal lesion have no statistically significant in association with this type of patients and this age range.
