| Summary: | Parallelism: relationships and contrasts between Homer and James Joyce. Synchrony and diachrony in the Odyssey and Ulysses aims, as a general objective, to establish similarities and differences between implicit worldviews in Homer´s Odyssey and James Joyce´s Ulysses. To achieve that objective we have used analytic-synthetic method and comparative analysis, basic methodologies in our work. Obviously, our best guide was the revision of bibliographical resources about the works of Homer and James Joyce. The remarkable results from comparative analysis are thematic specification in the worldviews of both works, where nature and history stand out, which have shaped men while defining them. The importance of mythology as former religion and today´s Catholicism are the structures that helped us specify the theme. The vision of man facing life and the world, their social roles and the way to endure brings virtue into play; while the unavoidable destiny for Greeks leads to death, for contemporary man is triggered by a lack of unity in this cultural subject, without underestimating the different levels of faith in every man. Finally, diverse worldviews have been established. In conclusion, it follows that each work reflects its own worldview and that both works may be related by similar structures of thought in the two authors, considering, also, that James Joyce built his own work taking the Odyssey as a model. Given this conclusion, it is recommended that educational components are scientifically constituted for a Chair in Comparative Literature. |
