description Tendinitis is an inflammation of the tendon that causes a rupture of the fibers affecting the musculoskeletal apparatus. The objective of this study was to compare the effectiveness of dimethyl sulfoxide, firocoxib and thermotherapy in chronic superficial digital flexor tendon injuries (SDTF) in horses. Twenty crossbreed jumping and polo horses with a history of tendon injuries were randomly divided into three groups. An Ultrasound examination was performed (Mindray DP-50 Vet®) with longitudinal and transversal sections evaluating three points: point 1 (A1-A2), point 2 (B1-B2) and point 3 (A3), followed by claudication and sensitivity examination before and after applying anti-inflammatory treatments for 10 days. In the dimethyl sulfoxide group (n=7) was applied 100 g/day (50 g/12h) over the superficial digital flexor tendon; in the firocoxib group (n=7) was administered 0.1 mg/kg/24h VO; and the thermotherapy control group (n=6) received heat (water bags at 40 °C for 20 min) and cold (gel packs at 0 °C for 5 min) over the posterior region of the metacarpus. Horses treated with thermotherapy on longitudinal ultrasound slice mean and minimum (51.22±12.80;17.583±5.73) pixels obtained an increase (p<0.05) after treatment (60.677±12.91;22.833±8.58), while DMSO presented a decrease in mean (52.965±13.68) and minimum (19.786±6.17) pixels. Firocoxib did not differ from thermotherapy and DMSO. Furthermore, the A1-A2 region presented an increase of pixels in the longitudinal ultrasound slice. The right extremity was the most affected associated with the sport of polo. Claudication was not related to SDTF lesions. Thus, thermotherapy and firocoxib are effective anti-inflammatory for treating SDTF lesions in horses and the claudication test is not a conclusive diagnosis in chronic type lesions.
