| description | Chemotherapy is an antineoplastic intervention that consists of the administration of various pharmacological agents. Its primary objective is to inhibit tumour growth by targeting the mechanisms of cellular replication. However, it is important to note that this treatment is also associated with a number of side effects, including oral complications such as reduced salivary flow. A reduction in salivary flow can lead to various dental and gingival issues, such as gingival bleeding, secondary infections of oral lesions, and mucositis, among others. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of chemotherapeutic drugs on saliva production. The research was followed an analytical, descriptive approach, supported by a comprehensive review of scientific literature published over the past 20 years. The study shows that salivary flow can be reduced by up to 50%. Patients may not notice any immediate symptoms. Specifically, 5-fluorouracil causes a 70% reduction in salivary flow. The most commonly used chemotherapy drugs are cisplatin, doxorubicin, 5-fluorouracil and cyclophosphamide. These drugs work by a variety of mechanisms, including the inhibition of cell division in rapidly proliferating cells. Both systemic and functional complications result from the reduction in oral mucosal lubrication. Furthermore, chemotherapeutic agents disrupt the nervous system responsible for regulating salivary gland function. Furthermore, chemotherapeutic agents affect the nervous system that regulates salivary gland function. The study concludes that chemotherapy is a significant contributor to alterations in salivary flow, leading to various oral complications that impact the health and quality of life of cancer patients. The research emphasizes the need for increased awareness regarding the effects of chemotherapeutic treatments on oral health and indicates the necessity for strategies to reduce these adverse effects |

The research emphasizes the need for increased awareness regarding the effects of chemotherapeutic treatments on oral health and indicates the necessity for strategies to reduce these adverse effectsLa quimioterapia, un tratamiento antineoplásico basado en la administración de diversos fármacos, tiene como objetivo suprimir la proliferación de tumores actuando sobre los mecanismos de reproducción celular.
