Resumo:As the age of the elderly advances, they progressively lose their independence; therefore, they need the support and care of other people to carry out their daily life basic activities. In most of the cases it is the family members themselves who assume that care; in this way the caregivers experience a series of changes for which they are not prepared, causing problems not only on a physical level but also psychically, thus arising the Caregiver Syndrome. For this reason, the current research aimed to: recognize the degree of functional dependence of the older adults, determine the overload level of caregivers and identify whether there is or not a relationship between these two variables. The current study was of a cross-sectional and correlational type, it was carried out in the homes of the elderly adults who attend the elderly’s centers in the city of Loja. Fifty caregivers were interviewed, obtaining the following results: the 84% of the caregivers presented some degree of overload according to the Zarit Burden Interview, and 94% of the elderly presented some degree of dependence according to the Barthel scale. With the application of Chi-squared, a value of p = 0.014 was found, which indicates a statistically significant association between the variables. The current work evidences the high prevalence of the Caregiver’s Syndrome in the relatives of the caregivers, mainly related to the degree of functional dependence of the elderly. Keywords: caregiver’s overload, Zarit, dependence, Barthel.
