Shrnutí:It is noticeable how the discursive narrative of the news around homicide goes from being a tragedy to a mass spectacle, contributing from its discourse to the construction of the reality favored by its subscribers. In the context of insecurity in Ecuador, the objective of this work is to analyze how the discursive treatment influences the social perception of violence and feelings of fear. Therefore, several instruments were implemented as information matrices for the analysis of the discourse of homicide news in Loja during 2023 (the most violent year in the country), in the newspapers La Hora and La Crónica. These were constructed based on schemes proposed by Molina and Van Dijk. Likewise, semi-structured interviews on the perception of violence based on these news items were applied to people between 18 and 50 years old, residents of the province. For this purpose, a mixed approach with a non-experimental and cross-sectional design was used. Among the main results, it was evidenced that the tone most used by the news was sensationalist with 42%. Similarly, in 67% of the cases exaggerated adjectives were identified, and in 83% metaphors. For example, terms such as “shot” or “plumb” were used to amplify the seriousness of the facts. On the other hand, 85% of the interviewees revealed that the news of homicides influences their feelings of insecurity, in addition, they perceive that violence in Loja is increasing and they fear that this feeling is being normalized. Therefore, sensationalist discursive strategies in homicide news are linked to the audience's appreciations of violence in Loja, consequently, people present feelings of fear, sadness and anger.
