| Summary: | Metabolic syndrome is a set of risk factors for type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease, characterized by insulin resistance and compensatory hyperinsulinism associated with disorders of metabolism of carbohydrates and lipids, high blood pressure, and obesity; related abnormalities that, by a combination of genetic and risk factors such as altered lifestyle (overeating, sedentary lifestyle), favor the development of disorders associated with the syndrome. The purpose of the study was to establish the presence of metabolic syndrome in carriers of the Urban Transport Cooperative Cuxibamba according to the criteria of the International Diabetes Federation, to determine the Homa Index in the carriers, to identify non-modifiable and modifiable risk factors for development of Metabolic Syndrome according to age and gender and to elaborate a Plan of Action-Auditor to reduce the risk of appearance and progression of Metabolic Syndrome in said group; period March-August 2016; being a prospective, quantitative study; consisting of 82 transporters, 76 men and 6 women, who determined anthropometric measures, personal data and biochemical analysis, using the criteria of the International Federation of Diabetes for Metabolic Syndrome and the formula of Matheus and Cols for HOMA Index, obtained information which was processed and expressed in frequency and percentage tables using Microsoft and Excel 2013 for further analysis. The results obtained were: 100% of transporters complied with the criterion of abdominal obesity, 41% presented Metabolic Syndrome; 46% had insulin resistance or HOMA Index> 3 and of them 40.2% presented Metabolic Syndrome; the risk factors that stood out were: sedentary lifestyle, overweight, high fat intake, family history of diabetes mellitus with 56%, 59%, 40% and 80%, respectively.
