| Özet: | Bovine viral diarrhea (BVD) is one of the main threats to livestock production, as it limits efficiency by affecting reproductive, respiratory, and gastrointestinal health. Additionally, it has a worldwide distribution and causes significant economic losses. Despite the relevance of the disease, there are no previous studies on BVD in the province of Sucumbíos, highlighting the urgent need to assess the health status of cattle herds. The objective of this study was to determine the seroprevalence and risk factors associated with the presence of bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) in the province of Sucumbíos, Ecuador. A cross- sectional study was conducted on 50 farms across the province, where a total of 500 cattle over six months of age were sampled. The commercial ELISA kit ID Screen® BVD p80 Antibody Competition was used to detect antibodies against the virus, and an epidemiological survey was conducted, including variables related to cattle management, herd density, feeding type, and reproductive practices. The results revealed a BVDV seroprevalence of 100% across the province. Additionally, the studied variables are important determinants for the presence of the virus in cattle. These findings highlight the importance of improving biosecurity practices on farms and the urgent need to implement vaccination programs in the region to control virus transmission and mitigate its negative effects on livestock production. |
