| Summary: | In the southern Andean region of Ecuador there is a contrast in the varieties of Spanish spoken by the inhabitants of two cities: Cuenca and Loja. This investigation focused on describing one of the phonetic particularities that serves as a distinguishing feature between the speech of these two cities. This feature corresponds to the assibilation of the vibrant phonemes /ɾ/ and /r/, which is presumed to be present in Cuencan speech, but not in the case of Loja. The methodology employed was based on the Labovian model for formulating sociolinguistic interviews. Six women from different generational groups belonging to two families, one from each city, were interviewed. Subsequently, the recorded interviews were analyzed using the Praat program, which helped to describe the acoustic and articulatory properties according to the linguistic variables in which they appeared. The results demonstrated the predominance of assibilation in the city of Cuenca (148). However, in the case of Loja, it was also present to a considerable extent in some contexts (43). Additionally, several allophones similar to those reported in another study conducted in Quito were detected. It is concluded that the assibilated variant prevails in the speech of Cuenca, although it is also present in Loja. Furthermore, the acoustic properties vary according to linguistic contexts, but their pronunciation is the same in both cities |
