Description
Summary:An analysis of the working environment of transsexual women in Gabriel(a) by Ecuadorian writer Ral Vallejo is conducted in the following essay with the purpose of examining the working conditions and spaces of trans women revealed in the novel. As a method of analyzing the novel, a qualitative approach was used in conjunction with a documentary design, which enabled a description and interpretation of the problem to be developed. The theoretical framework for interpreting the text is based on gender studies, sociological aspects of transsexuality, human rights of trans people, and sociology of literature. The content analysis evidenced how transsexual people are victims of multiple exclusions in the spaces of sociability, especially in the workplace, which generates conditions of vulnerability. Because of discrimination and stigma against transsexual women, the most common means of subsistence for them is beauty care and sex work. Raul Vallejo's narrative, however, represents a significant change in discourse that supports the inclusion of transsexuals in the labor force and acknowledges their rights to employment.
