| Özet: | The guinea pig production systems are breeding models aimed at obtaining optimal performance. The objective of the study was to characterize the guinea pig production systems in the Urdaneta parish, Saraguro canton, Loja province in order to describe management conditions, feeding, health, and zoogenetic characteristics of the productive systems and evaluate the socioeconomic aspects of guinea pig producers. The research was carried out based on surveys of 40 producers in the parish through snowball non-probabilistic sampling. The most prevalent system is the Family-owned one (less than 100 guinea pigs) with 88%, the Commercial-Enterprise system (more than 500 guinea pigs) with 7%, and the Family-Commercial system (between 100 to 500 guinea pigs) with 5%. They mostly have facilities in pools (58%). The mating system mostly used is controlled mating (67%). 93% of the producers feed their guinea pigs solely with forage, and 7% use a mixed feeding system (concentrate and forage). Regarding the incidence of health problems, lice and mites are the most common (85%). Guinea pig breeding is mostly carried out by individuals over 60 years of age (37%) of the female gender. Out of the 40 producers, 80% have received training or courses, and very few rely on the internet to acquire knowledge. In conclusion, in the Urdaneta parish, traditional management predominates, mostly carried out by individuals who have only completed primary education |
