| Summary: | Infections related to healthcare are a major cause of mortality and morbidity among patients. Among them, one of the most common is surgical site infection (SSI). Patients who develop SSIs are 60% more likely to enter an intensive care unit, 5 times more than reentering the hospital and twice as likely to die as patients without SSI. So it was decided to review the literature on surgical wound infections and epidemiological aspects, because they continue to be a major problem for many hospitals. The rate of surgical wound infection is one of the most important indexes to establish the quality of a surgical service for the enormous health and economic costs that this brings. This is due largely to the lack of studies in hospitals to identify those factors that increase the risk of surgical wound infection and lack of postoperative surveillance methods after discharge, which brings rates underreported incidence and inadequate infection control. Hence the interest to know the true incidence and comparison with the figures obtained in other centers, which can serve as a reference, to improve clinical practice. The type of study that were used in the realization of this project is a prospective research study , during the period May to December , 2012, having as a study to Isidro Ayora Hospital of Loja in the area of surgery , taking as example to all patients recorded as postsurgical patients during the study period . For the realization of this project will take data from the patients according to their medical records and daily observation of postoperative evolution. Determining the end of this research that there was a 13.07 % of surgical wound infections according to total surgeries were 489 of which 67 had surgical site infection and the most frequent type of injury was showed clean - contaminated wounds 25 cases representing 37.31 %, then the wound contaminated with 16 cases, and it was determined that only 32 patients were treated with prophylactic antibiotics performed 489 surgeries. The most commonly used antibiotic prophylaxis Cefazolin 1g IV was applied to 190 patients. |
