Sumari:The reduction in the birth rate and the increase in life expectancy at birth in recent years have produced an increase in the elderly population. At this stage, a series of biological and psychosocial changes occur, as can be seen by the modification in body functioning and the appearance of associated diseases. In the psychosocial aspect the older adult experiences a deterioration in the affective aspect that is due to: the loss of friends, of the spouse, changes in the role within the family and in society affecting their self-perception and self-esteem. The present study entitled "Depresión de los adultos mayores de la Casa del día San José de la ciudad de Loja", It´s objectives are to determine the level of depression in older adults; and identify the factors related to depression in the elderly who attend this center. This study is descriptive-cross-sectional, we worked with a population of 20 people, as a technique a survey was used and as a tool a form that contains the "Geriatric depression scale elaborated by J, A, Yesavage (1983)". The results show that of the 100% (20) of the elderly 55% present severe depression, 40% moderate depression and 5% mild depression. Within the biological factors we find, physical alterations (mobility) with 85%, hypertension in 90% and sleep disorder in 75%; psychological factors, low self-esteem in 90% and social factors we find that 50% are widowed. It was concluded that most of the older adults surveyed have severe depression, which is worrisome. Keywords: factors biological, society, well-being, old age
