| description | The presence of an ulcer per pressure (UPP) is an event that is tied to the clinical safety of the patient, since they form part of the big geriatric syndromes, being considered to be a real problem of public health, due to the fact that they affect severely the quality of life of the patients, they managing to cause even the death. The present research was a study of descriptive type, carried out in the area of internal medicine of the Isidro Ayora Hospital of Loja, with a sample of 7 nursing professionals and 13 nursing assistants, which tries to determine the knowledge and practices of the nursing staff in prevention of the ulcers per pressure of the geriatric patient and to determine the frequency of existing UPP during the month of compilation of information. A questionnaire on the basic concepts about the UPP was used, and an observation guide with items about preventive activities; which allowed to obtain the following: the knowledge about prevention in UPP was higher in the nursing staff with 35%; whereas the assistant staff was 25%, regarding the activities that they carry out for preventing the UPP, 30% of the nursing professionals does not carry out them; while 40% of the assistant staff do it; in addition, it was possible to determine during August 8.9% (4) UPP's cases; with these considerations it is important that the Manager of the internal medicine service of the H.I.A.L promotes spaces of training about the prevention of the UPP, specially to the assistant staff; besides, to raise strategies that allow the fulfillment of the UPP preventive actions by the nursing staff. KEY WORDS: Ulcers per pressure, prevention, knowledge and executionLa aparición de una úlcera por presión (UPP) es un suceso que está ligado a la seguridad clínica del paciente, ya que forman parte de los grandes síndromes geriátricos, considerándose un verdadero problema de salud pública, debido a que afectan severamente la calidad de vida de los pacientes, llegando incluso a ocasionarles la muerte. La presente investigación fue un estudio de tipo descriptivo, realizado en el área de medicina interna del Hospital Isidro Ayora de Loja, con una muestra de 7 profesionales de enfermería y 13 auxiliares de enfermería, el cual pretende determinar los conocimientos y prácticas del personal de enfermería en prevención de las úlceras por presión del paciente geriátrico y determinar la frecuencia de UPP existentes durante el periodo de recolección de datos. Se empleó un cuestionario sobre conceptos básicos acerca de las UPP, y una guía de observación con ítems sobre las actividades preventivas. Lo que permitió conseguir lo siguiente; los conocimientos sobre prevención en UPP fue mayor en el profesional de enfermería con un 35%, mientras que del auxiliar de enfermería fue de un 25%, en cuanto a las actividades que realizan para prevención de las UPP, el 40% de las auxiliares realiza la mayoría de actividades preventivas, mientras que del profesional de enfermería las realiza solo un 20%, además se pudo determinar durante el mes de agosto 8.9%(4) casos de UPP, con estas consideraciones es importante que la Jefa del servicio de medicina interna del H.I.A.L promueva espacios de capacitación sobre la prevención de las UPP especialmente al personal auxiliar, además que se plantee estrategias que permitan el cumplimiento de las acciones preventivas de las UPP por parte del personal de enfermería.
