Shrnutí: | The Problems of visual acuity are common, mainly in school children, the lack of diagnosis and inadequate study of risk factors, generate ocular pathologies. The objective: is to analyze the risk factors associated to the decrease of the visual acuity in schoolchildren belonging to the school of basic education “18 de Noviembre” from the city of Loja period February- July 2016. Methods and Materials: descriptive study, performed in 262 students from “18 de Noviembre” primary school, for data collection a previously validated form was used; in the estimation of visual acuity the Snellen table was used. Results: a 57% of children presented a decrease in the visual acuity, from these children of 5, 6 and 7 years of age the most affected with a 15% respectively, the most affected gender was feminine with a 55% , the most frequent the visual tiredness symptom was burning or itching with a 55%. A 59% presented a family history of lens use, low outdoor activity with a 45%, 28% eye infections and 16% prematurity. The family history of lens use was the most predisposed factor for the decrease in visual acuity. Conclusions: The frequency of schoolchildren with decreased visual acuity is high, the main predisposing factor is not controllable so the early identification of the problem is important.
