Gaia:This research study was designed to determine the relationship between personality traits and strategies to cope with stress. To achieve the aforementioned, the following was proposed: identify the predominant personality traits and find out what strategies to cope with stress were used and thus develop a psychological intervention proposal based on the predominant personality traits, in patients between 20 and 40 years of age of the Comprehensive Care Unit for people living with HIV / AIDS, of the General Hospital Isidro Ayora de Loja, in order to promote and strengthen strategies of adaptive coping to deal with stress. The study sample was comprised of 70 patients with whom it was possible to carry out a non-experimental, quantitative, and cross-sectional study by using a semi-structured interview, the SEAPSI questionnaires, as well as a Stress Coping Questionnaire (CAE); through these tools, concrete results were obtained. It was possible to establish that the personality disorder traits that predominated were the histrionic with 22.9%, followed by the cyclothymic with 20.0% and finally the anankastic with 17.1%. The strategies to cope with stress used by the patients were: focus on the solution of the problem with 20,9%, open emotional expression with 18,6%, negative self-targeting with 17,1%, positive reevaluation with 14,3%, and in a lesser proportion: avoidance with 12,9%, seeking social support with 10,0%, and religion with 7,1%. The patients with histrionic personality traits emotionally expressed the problems that caused them stress the cyclothymic traits used negative self-targeting as a strategy to cope with stress; and the anankastic traits focused on solving the problem in order to cope with the stressful situation. Keywords: personality traits, stress coping strategies, HIV-AIDS.
