Características anatómicas del periodonto infantil. Revisión bibliográfica

The juvenile periodontium is an integral part of the oral cavity, consisting of a collection of tissues that both maintain and protect the tooth, but it has different characteristics from the adult periodontium. The aim of this research project was to analyze the anatomical characteristics of both juvenile and adult periodontium in pathological and physiological conditions. This investigation is of considerable importance as it offers the potential to differentiate between them. This study was descriptive, analytical, bibliographic and cross-sectional in nature. It included 51 scientific articles and literature reviews, written in both Spanish and English, which are included and obtained from different databases. Regarding the anatomical characteristics of the juvenile periodontium in the physiological state, 90% of the cases had a pale pink colour to a lesser extent, with orange spots appearing from the age of 3 years. In addition, 60% of the cases had a flatter papilla in the mesiodistal direction and rounded in the buccolingual direction, while 50% had a gingival sulcus depth of 2.1 ± 0.2 mm in the primary dentition. When the juvenile periodontium is in a pathological state, it is observed that 85.71% of cases show gingival inflammation and bleeding, 57.14% show a reddish gingival colour along with bone loss, and in 28.57% of cases the probing depth can reach 5 to 6 mm. The juvenile periodontium is subject to change during its growth and development, particularly during tooth eruption. Consequently, its characteristics may vary.
