Sažetak:Distal peripheral neuropathy NPD, defined as a complication of diabetes mellitus that causes peripheral nerve dysfunction, is one of the most frequent chronic complications, as well as the most delayed diagnosed. Adequate metabolic control in patients is an essential factor that slows the development of peripheral neuropathy. In order to determine the relationship between metabolic control established by the factors that promote the development of distal peripheral neuropathy in diabetic type 2 patients, a cross-sectional correlational study was carried out in 134 patients attended at the Health Center No. 3 Loja. The Michigan Neuropathy Screening Instrument (MNSI) and a form that collects data corresponding to factors associated with the disease for each member were applied. Descriptive measures were used: absolute and relative frequencies, X2 test of independence or association with correction for continuity of Yates. Using a significance level of 5%. The study was carried out with a predominance of women (74.6%), mature adults (59%), married marital status (86.6%) and primary level (55.2%). While the only risk factors that were significant for NPD were total cholesterol and glycosylated hemoglobin (p<0.05). It is therefore concluded that distal peripheral neuropathy in the sample investigated was associated with total cholesterol and uncontrolled glycosylated hemoglobin, elements that could be introduced as tracer indicators for the prevention and management of distal peripheral neuropathy in diabetic patients.
