The World Health Organisation estimates that around 80% of visual discapacity are preventable with an early diagnosis and treatment. Vision has an important role during learning, therefore, we decided to analyse the impact of decreased visual acuity in academic performance in the students of the Escuela de Educación Básica 3 de Diciembre in the city of Catacocha, Loja in Ecuador. The retrospective study was done over the years 2018 and 2019, using the academic averages and results obtained by the Programa Errores de Refracción (Refraction Errors Program). A total of 708 students were included in the study with 50.28% being male and 49.54% being female. The study’s results were that 87.71% have normal vision in their best eye. Students without visual impairments, a 40.63%, obtain grades higher than 9/10 points, as opposite to the 27.54% with unilateral condition and the 33.68% with bilateral condition. Of the students with normal visual acuity in their best eye, a 38.97% obtained grades higher than 9/10 points, compared to 33.33% with vision close to normal, 25.93% with a light visual impairment and 66.67% with moderate impairments. Thus, the conclusion is that impairment in visual acuity impact negatively in the correct academic development of students.
